Literary Term 3: Symbols
Literary Term 4: Similies
A simile that stood out in The Great Gatsby was in chapter three when Nick was describing one of Gatsby's house parties. "men and girls came and went like moths among the whispering and champagne and the stars." (Fitzgerald, chapter 3 page 1 ) This basically means that the people who attended Gatsby's parties were like moths who are attracted to the lights that were at the house instead of being attracted to the host of the party. Basically, his guest came and went. Another simile found was "A damp streak of hair lay like a dash of blue paint across her cheek." (Fitzgerald, chapter 5, page 90). This was when Nick had invited Daisy over his house for Tea for Gatsby for them to reconnect. This quote is important because the color blue represents a mood which is sad and Daisy fits in for that description. Also, her hair laying like blue paint across her cheek is suppose to represent tears.
